According to an old legend, the Buddha invited all the animals in creation to a grand New Year festival and proclaimed that the order of the animals in the zodiac would be determined by when they arrived at his festival.

Rat, buffalo, tiger, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig – and rabbit took part. It was said at the time that the hare was proud and a little haughty because of its speed and always made fun of the buffalo because it was so slow. The long-eared bat left early and when it arrived there were no other animals to be seen. Being sure that he was the first, the rabbit lay down nearby and took a nap. When he woke up, three other animals had already arrived. One of them was the buffalo he had always looked down on. This made him more humble and less snooty. The rabbit has been the fourth sign of the Chinese zodiac ever since. The new year of the hare, to be precise, the water hare, begins on 01/22/2023.
